The Story Of Creating The
Web Site
"Why
does a Russian girl in her early twenties need to
create
an educational site about foreign languages in English?"
My
name is Julia and I am the author of Foreign
Languages Guide.
I am Russian, so English
is my second language.
I will tell you a short story to answer the above
question.
Foreign Languages have been fascinating me since I was
a child.
The first time I heard a person speaking a foreign
language was actually our teacher of English at school.
I was so impressed that
speaking English and going to an English speaking country “one day”
became my
dream.
And here is my way of achieving this dream – from
those school days till now…
Lessons at school didn’t meet my expectations. To
correct it, the results weren’t impressive - I was not able to speak
English
after some years of studying it.
I had some basic knowledge of the language, could say
simple phrases about myself and ask simple questions. Sadly, I could
not keep
any real conversation, it took me pretty much time to think before
answering
any question - I just had poor language skills.
When I turned 15, I changed the school and started
taking English lessons twice a week additionally. Since that time it
was a
whole different story.
"Living In The USA..."
At the age of 18 years old I was lucky to go to the USA
as
a participant of Work and Travel program. Thanks to the program I spent
two
summers in the USA
- in 2005 and 2006.
In the United
States I tried to communicate as much
as I
could both with the natives and people from other countries who had
mastered
English.
It was pretty difficult at the beginning. I realized
that my vocabulary was scanty – I knew just enough to explain some
general
things. But it was a problem when I wanted to express myself and
explain some
things in a better way.
Another thing is that I did not understand real
conversations
very well and I spoke pretty slowly – I had to think and find the right
words
before I could respond correctly.
Yes, that’s how things were at the beginning. But I was
persistent and had a burning desire to speak English.
I communicated with people, spent pretty much time at
a local library reading books and tried to remember as much new things
as I
could. At the end of the summer I could feel that I speak much better
English.
That experience was invaluable for me, both for foreign
language learning and my personal growth too.
After I came back to Russia I passed the TOEFL
IBT test.
I got 90 scores out of 120 (equivalent - 233 out of 300
(Computer-based) or 577
out of 677 (Paper-based)) which was a pretty good result!
I was happy.
"I've got an idea..."
Since that time English has been a part of my life.
I use it every day to communicate with people from all
over the world. So I constantly develop my language skills and increase
vocabulary.
Whenever I have time, I search for some new
information about best language learning strategies. I try to reveal
sensible
methods of foreign language learning and how to achieve best results in
a
reasonable time.
That’s how I came up with the idea of creating Foreign Languages Guide.
I want you
to benefit from my knowledge and
avoid some mistakes that I’ve done.
I decided to share with you this information, which,
from my personal experience, is invaluable in a language learning
journey.
