1. Find your inner
motivation
Motivation
is everything. Find what really motivates
you in learning a new language and
you will never give up. You will study a language until you can speak
it
fluently. So
ask yourself –
why
do I want to learn a foreign language? What
do I need it for? Will it help to change something in my life? Take
your time, think about it very carefully. Wrong
motivation can lead you to wrong results. Look at these answers, “I
started
studying this language because it’s the most popular language/everyone
studies
it”. These things will never
motivate you. You
need to find your own answers. Your own reasons will help you continue
learning
a language when obstacles show up. They will always give you drive to
move
forward because they are so important for you.
2. Spend
the time
How
to learn a foreign language? Spend
the time! One
of the most important factors when learning a foreign language is how
much time
you invest in exploring it. The more time you spend with the
language, the
faster you will learn. There
is a great difference between what is said and
what is done. There
are so many people who “want” to learn a foreign
language, but they do absolutely nothing to achieve it. Decide for
yourself,
whether you are a person who just talks but does
nothing or you are the one who takes actions to achieve something. I
believe that you want to be a person not say-er but do-er. I
know that because you are reading this article right now! You are
interested in
knowing essential tips how to learn a foreign language. You are
interested in
the subject; you are searching for some valuable information about it
-> you are taking actions! Spend
the time (at least, 30 minutes a day) learning your target language.
Make it
your rule number 1. Practicing
daily has better efficiency than even the very best method of language
training. Do
not skip a day!
3. Do not be afraid of
making mistakes
You
cannot avoid making mistakes when learning a language! It
is natural. Think of a child who is learning to walk or imagine a
person who is
learning to ice-skate. They are falling down but continue learning! Do
NOT be embarrassed of your mistakes. Stop thinking of what other people
might
think of you. The
most essential thing for you is to start speaking. Keep it in mind and just speak in
the way you feel. You
will see that other people can understand what you
are saying! If
you make some minor grammar mistakes but
people still understand you – you
are on the right way! Continue
and you will speak a proper language much sooner
than a person who keeps silent because of his fear.
4. Think about your progress
Once
you start feeling that you make a progress in foreign language
learning, you
become passionate about the process. Enjoy
your lessons, notice every minor improvements in how you
speak/write/can
understand your target language. Feel happy about it! Never
compare yourself to others, but try to become better every day in
language
learning and other fields of your life. Think
about your own progress.
5. Take responsibility for
your own learning
If
you do NOT desire to learn the language, you won’t. However,
if you DO want to learn the language, take control. Your
teacher cannot teach you to speak a language, but you can learn to
become
fluent if you want to. Do
not wait for someone else to show you the language, nor to tell you
what to do.
Do not expect that someone will tell you the only right learning
methods and
techniques which will guarantee your success. Discover
the language by yourself, like a child growing up. Plan
your language
learning process and progress. Then follow your plan!
